In his book "Scholarship Reconsidered,
Ernest Boyer claims that "We need
scholars who not only skillfully explore the frontiers of knowledge, but
also integrate ideas, connect thought to action, and inspire students.”
Boyer’s comments speak to the heart of my teaching philosophy and the Center
for Education’s focus on the knowledgeable and reflective practitioner.
In order to demonstrate excellence in teaching, the theoretic must monitor
practice while practice monitors the theoretic. Good teaching springs
from the careful examination of the relationship between theory, practice,
and a passion for learning.
