ABSTRACT
The purpose of this study was to determine if the scores on the seventh grade Terra-Nova math and reading assessment could be used to predict the reading and math scores on the eighth grade Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) and also to determine if gender had any effect on students' scores.
The study utilized samples of student scores from both the PSSA and the Terra-Nova assessments for three consecutive years, 1998-1999, 1999-2000, 2000-2001. A total of 499 students' scores were used from one rural school district located in Northeastern Pennsylvania. Descriptive and correlational statistics were used in this study.
The results indicated that there was a predictive correlation between the seventh grade Terra-Nova math and reading assessment and the PSSA math and reading assessment. The results of the study also indicated that males scored better than females on both the Terra-Nova math and the PSSA math.
However, in a subsequent regression analysis gender was not found to be a significant predictor on either the Terra-Nova math and reading assessment or the PSSA math and reading assessment.
